Walter
ThompsonComposer, Conductor,
Woodwinds, Educatorhas been composing professionally for the past 32 years, performing and conducting his compositions internationally. He has composed/conducted Soundpaintings with contemporary orchestras in many cities around the world including Barcelona, Paris, Oslo, Berlin, Bergen, Copenhagen, and Reykjavik and has taught Soundpainting at the Paris Conservatoire; Eastman School of Music; Iceland Academy of the Arts; University of Michigan; Grieg Academy in Bergen, Norway; University of Iowa; Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music; and New York University among many others. Thompson is founder of and composer/conductor for The Walter Thompson Orchestra, based in New York City.
Some of Thompson's projects this year have included three large-scale Soundpaintings: Columbus—A Soundpainting Opera; Sirkus Soundpainting, comprising 125 circus performers and 32 musicians; and The Lucid Soundpainting in collaboration with dancer/choreographer Fay Simpson and students of Woodrow Wilson School (funded by a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation). In November 2004 Thompson recorded a DVD of his multidisciplinary symphony PEXO, funded by a grant from the Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust. He has also recently published Soundpainting Workbook 1.
